Animal Description

The Sri Lankan rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) holds the incredible title of being the smallest wild cat species in the entire world. Fierce, elusive, and lightning-fast, this pocket-sized predator is practically a miniature version of a leopard, possessing a highly active and bold personality that belies its tiny stature.

An amazing fact about rusty-spotted cats is their evolutionary adaptability in Sri Lanka. While populations on the Indian mainland are largely restricted to dry grasslands and open scrublands, the Sri Lankan populations have successfully adapted to live in almost every single habitat available on the island—from arid coastal dunes to the dripping, high-altitude montane cloud forests. They are also known for their tree-climbing prowess; when threatened, they can run up vertical tree trunks with the fluid speed and agility of a squirrel.
