Animal Description
The Asian Palm Civet is one of Sri Lanka’s most resilient, adaptable, and ecologically vital nocturnal mammals. Often misleadingly called a "civet cat," this small, cat-like carnivoran belongs to a completely separate lineage (Viverridae). It plays a massive role in maintaining forest ecosystems as a primary seed disperser. An intriguing fact about this animal is its intense love for fermented sweet palm sap. They frequently raid tapping pots hung from palm trees, a habit that has earned them the universal nickname "Toddler Cat." They are also famous worldwide for their role in producing "Kopi Luwak" or civet coffee, which is processed from coffee beans they digest and pass.
