Animal Description
The Black-capped Kingfisher is one of the most striking kingfishers seen in Sri Lanka, though it is a scarce winter visitor rather than a resident. It is easily recognized by its glossy black cap, snow-white throat, deep chestnut belly, brilliant blue wings, and large coral-red bill. Unlike the common White-throated Kingfisher, this species prefers coastal mangroves, estuaries, and tidal creeks. It is shy and elusive, often remaining in dense mangrove branches, making it more challenging to spot despite its vivid coloration. In flight, it shows bold blue wings with white patches and is known for its loud, harsh calls.
