Pied Kingfisher
Animal Description

The Pied Kingfisher is a fascinating bird known for its striking black and white plumage and its unique hunting style. It is one of the few kingfisher species that can hover in mid-air for sustained periods, a skill it uses to spot and dive for its prey. Unlike many other kingfishers, which are solitary, the Pied Kingfisher is a social bird that can often be seen in pairs or small family groups. Its gregarious nature and conspicuous presence along water bodies make it a familiar sight in Sri Lanka.

Bird Identification
The Pied Kingfisher is easily identified by its black and white coloration, which is a key distinguishing feature from other brightly colored kingfishers. The male has two black bands across its chest, while the female has a single, often incomplete, black band. It also has a distinctive neat black crest on its head. Its ability to hover for a long time over water before diving is another unique behavior that helps in identification.
