Greater Spotted Eagle
Animal Description

The Greater Spotted Eagle is a large, dark brown raptor with powerful wings and a strong, commanding presence. It is a rare winter migrant to Sri Lanka, usually seen in the dry zone wetlands and open grasslands. Though uncommon, it is a prized sighting for birdwatchers. This eagle prefers marshes, riversides, and large tanks where it hunts for waterbirds and small mammals.

An interesting fact: the Greater Spotted Eagle often soars with slightly drooping wings, giving it a distinctive silhouette in the sky. Juveniles have spotted golden flecks on their wings and back, which fade as they mature. Sadly, this eagle is globally classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss and declining populations in its breeding grounds.
