Legge’s Hawk-Eagle
Animal Description

The Legge’s Hawk-Eagle is one of Sri Lanka’s most powerful and striking raptors. Endemic to the island, it is often seen soaring above forests or perched silently in the canopy. With a long crest, heavily streaked underparts, and broad wings, this eagle is an apex predator, preying on medium-sized birds, reptiles, and mammals. It is named after William Vincent Legge, a British soldier and ornithologist who studied Sri Lanka’s birds. Being an endemic species, its survival is tightly linked to the island’s forests, making it a key conservation priority.
