Animal Description

The Sri Lankan fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus koladivius), a medium-sized wild cat adapted to wetlands, is easily recognized by its olive-gray coat with dark spots, short tail, and slightly webbed feet. It is a solitary and nocturnal hunter, perfectly adapted for swimming and fishing in rivers, marshes, and lagoons. This elusive feline is Sri Lanka’s primary wetland predator, feeding mainly on fish, amphibians, and small mammals, and is considered a key indicator species for healthy wetland ecosystems.
