Animal Description

The Sri Lankan golden jackal (Canis aureus naria), a medium-sized wild canid, is recognized by its grizzled golden-brown coat, bushy tail, and sharp facial features. Agile and highly adaptable, jackals are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, often seen foraging alone, in pairs, or small family groups. They are primarily nocturnal, but can sometimes be observed trotting along roads or open scrublands in the early morning or evening. Their howls and yelps serve as territorial calls and are commonly heard in the dry zone.
