Sri Lankan Leopard
Animal Description

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), Sri Lanka’s top predator, is a sleek and powerful big cat and the island’s only large wild feline. It is smaller than African leopards but is the largest leopard subspecies in Asia, with males weighing up to 90 kg. Their golden coat with dark rosettes blends perfectly into forests and grasslands, making them masters of stealth. These leopards are solitary hunters, feeding mainly on spotted deer, wild boar, monkeys, and small mammals. They are highly adaptable, seen from dry zone jungles to montane forests, but are now Endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Spotting one in the wild is a rare and unforgettable experience for any visitor.
