Animal Description

The Sri Lankan purple-faced langur (Semnopithecus vetulus) is an arboreal and exclusively endemic monkey known for its dark brown to black fur, pale rump patch, and purplish face framed by a thick beard. This shy leaf-eater is primarily active in the tree canopies of wet and intermediate zone forests, rarely coming to the ground. It plays an important ecological role in seed dispersal, helping maintain Sri Lanka’s rainforest health. Due to habitat loss and hunting, it is considered one of the most threatened primates in the country.
