Animal Description

The Sri Lankan spotted deer (Axis axis ceylonensis), also known as the Ceylon axis deer, is one of the most graceful and commonly seen herbivores in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. It has a reddish‑brown coat covered in white spots, a white underbelly, and a distinctive white throat patch. Males carry three‑tined antlers, which they shed and regrow annually. Spotted deer are highly alert and agile, often moving in herds for safety, with a few males guarding the group. They are an important prey species for predators like leopards and occasionally crocodiles, and their alarm calls are a key signal for other animals in the forest. Seeing them grazing in open glades or near waterholes is a classic dry zone safari experience.
