Animal Description
The Sri Lankan wild boar (Sus scrofa cristatus), the wild ancestor of the domestic pig, is a stocky and powerful omnivore found across the island’s forests and scrublands. It has a bristly dark brown to black coat, a large head with a prominent snout, and sharp tusks in males used for digging and defense. Wild boar are highly adaptable, living in small family groups called sounders, and they play an important ecological role by turning over soil and dispersing seeds. They are also a major prey species for Sri Lankan leopards.
