Animal Description

The Stork-billed Kingfisher is a large and striking bird, easily identified by its massive, bright red bill. Its body is adorned with a beautiful mix of colors: a yellowish-brown head, a vibrant blue back and wings, and a rufous-orange underside. Its legs are also red.

Its presence is often announced by a distinctive, low, and far-carrying "laughing" call. A fascinating hunter, this kingfisher is known for its patient demeanor, often perching silently on a branch over water for extended periods before making a swift, powerful dive to catch fish, crabs, or other prey. They are typically found in the forested wetlands of Sri Lanka's Wet and Intermediate Zones, inhabiting areas with rivers, lakes, and estuaries.
